Traditional dental fillings typically feature silver amalgam, a substance that contains mercury, tin, zinc, and copper. While these fillings are generally effective, they’re easily noticed and don’t blend in with the rest of your teeth. At Mission Dental in Eugene, Oregon, Timothy Lee, DDS, and the team proudly offer white fillings. If you have a cavity or otherwise damaged tooth, white fillings are worth considering. A filling is a restorative dental procedure used to address damage caused by decay, teeth grinding, or bad habits like chewing on ice or biting your fingernails.
Traditionally, dental fillings were made of silver amalgam or gold, but thanks to modern scientific advances, there are now composite-resin or white fillings, that are equally durable, but more aesthetically pleasing.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with amalgam or metal fillings, but they do contain trace amounts of mercury. The American Dental Association says amalgam fillings are generally safe for consumers, but if you’re allergic to metal or you’re pregnant, white fillings lower your risk of potential complications.
In addition, metal fillings are drastically different in color and appearance from your natural teeth, which makes them more noticeable when you laugh, speak, or yawn. White fillings, on the other hand, blend in with your enamel, ensuring only you and Dr. Lee know you’ve had work done.
Putting in a white filling only takes one appointment.
First, Dr. Lee administers a local anesthetic to numb your teeth and gums. Next, he uses a drill or other similar tool to carefully remove the decayed or damaged area of your affected tooth. After removing the decay, Dr. Lee prepares your tooth for the filling by cleaning out any remaining bacteria and debris. If the decay extends into your tooth, near the nerve, Dr. Lee applies a composite resin material to protect it.
After the protective resin dries, Dr. Lee applies your white filling in layers. He carefully spreads a single layer of composite resin on top of your tooth and uses a special light to “cure” the solution. He repeats this process multiple times, restoring your tooth to its original height and shape. After applying the final layer of composite resin, Dr. Lee polishes your white filling and trims off any excess material. The entire process typically takes between 60-90 minutes.
Caring for white fillings is easy and hassle-free. Simply brush your teeth twice each day, floss once a day, and visit Dr. Lee and the team at Mission Dental once every six months for a professional cleaning and exam. You should also avoid biting down on hard objects like candies, popcorn kernels, or ice cubes.
